Dominika B.: Labels from here to there

Quote: "How do you even spell chia seeds?"

Cathegory: Pantry and kitchen organising

Duration: 2 hours

Project vibe: „Details matter.“ (Jobs, 2013)

Tag, label, sticker, marking, štítok (read: shtee-tok). One thing, many names. The point is always the same: to know what is inside. We label food containers, boxes, crates, bins and other dividers of the material property of an individual or a group of individuals.

The purpose of labelling is a clear, legible (and ideally beautiful) definition of what is in the container. The cherry on top, the seal of quality, a treat for the eye, a label on a jar.

Labelling comes at the very end of organising, once every thing has its place and the system makes sense to the person using it. That is the moment we can name things for good, not in theory but entirely in practice.

Can't name a category? Either you are not finished yet, or you are short on imagination.

At Dominika's we labelled the pantry, the bathroom and part of the kitchen. The categories were clear, but we always keep a reserve, 15 to 20 percent of both space and labels, for whatever comes next. Because a home is a living thing. Something is always up.

The client picks the font and the type of label according to what she likes. Why would anyone want a label they find ugly? Some want everything legible at first glance, others prefer a quiet, discreet marking. We explain the differences, the final call is hers.

Question: Chia seeds, hello, where are you?
Answer: Right here. No thinking required. You look, you see. Simple, plain. Not a big thing, but it makes a big difference. In an individual, and in a group of individuals.

Your home can work like this too.
